Your Complete (and Growing) Guide to Sulfite-Free Wine

To understand sulfite-free wine, let’s first talk about sulfites.

Sulfites are naturally occurring compounds that are created during the wine fermentation process. All wines contain some amount of sulfites, which occur naturally during fermentation. To preserve the wine’s condition, winemakers will add their own sulfites, a practice dating to ancient times. These added sulfites protect against oxidation and bacteria, preserving the wine’s freshness and flavor.

Some people have a negative reaction to the sulfites found in most traditional wine. If that describes you, consider sulfite-free wine. Also known as natural wines or organic wines, sulfite free wines are a great option for health- and environmentally conscious wine lovers.

In this guide, you’ll learn the basics of sulfite-free wine. Then, check out our recommendations and reviews of the best organic and sulfite-free wines.

What Is Sulfite-Free Wine?

Sulfite-free wine, also known as organically made wine, is very similar to traditional wine, just without the added sulfites. Organically made wine also contains organic grapes and yeast, which helps reduce the amount of naturally occurring sulfites.

The easiest way to tell if a bottle of wine is sulfite free is to read the label. Look for the phrase “no sulfites added.”  When you’re shopping around, you may encounter similar terms, such as low-sulfite wine, organic wine, and natural wine. These all generally refer to the same thing, but may depend on the winemaker. If you’re unsure, check out our reviews or contact us.

Are Sulfites in Wine Bad for You?

Sulfites in wine are generally not bad for you. However, some people, especially those with asthma, may experience what’s called sulfite sensitivity. For these folks, sulfites may trigger mild allergy-like symptoms up to more serious asthmatic reactions. If you aren’t sure whether you should consume sulfites, contact your doctor.

By the way, many believe that sulfites cause hangovers, which isn’t true. Hangovers are usually caused by dehydration, not sulfites themselves. If you want to avoid the hangover, mix in a couple glasses of water (always a good idea!) or try one of our recommended alcohol-free wines.
